AccelNet Toxo Data Harmonization
One of the central aims of the NSF AccelNet Toxo grant is to harmonize approaches for characterizing and sharing field, diagnostic, and genotype data across Toxoplasma research networks. This will support the transformation of individual datasets into shared scientific resources, enabling reproducible research and cross-study analyses (note, however, that data providers always retain control over their data, including when this is ready for broader dissemination). The AccelNet Toxo data harmonization effort will be developed collaboratively with all participating networks, in coordination with the ClinEpiDB team and the broader VEuPathDB project, providing browser-based, intuitive data resources for infectious disease research.
VEuPathDB bioinformatics resources enable users to manage, access, analyze, and share pathogen genomics and functional data across multiple databases (including ToxoDB.org). ClinEpiDB.org supports the exploration, harmonization, and reuse of population-level field and clinical datasets to advance public health research. Building on this foundation, dataExplorer (coming soon!) will provide a complementary platform allowing data users to privately upload and explore their own datasets, with flexible options to share data if and when they choose to do so.
Significant data-related goals in support of AccelNet Toxo:
- Collaborative data harmonization across networks, using shared standards to align datasets.
- Network-driven data contribution and stewardship, ensuring that datasets are well documented and properly attributed.
- Network control over data sharing decisions, including if and when data are shared, and with whom.
- A user-friendly platform for accessing, exploring, and visualizing network datasets.
- Training and capacity building in practical data management and dissemination, thereby promoting consistent, high-quality data practices across networks.
Timeline for data-related AccelNet Toxo activities:
- Early March 2026: ClinEpiDB will present at the March AccelNet Toxo monthly call to introduce themselves, share an overview of their data platforms, and provide a demonstration of key features and workflows.
- Late March 2026: ClinEpiDB will consult with research teams 1:1 to better understand needs, data types, and potential harmonization opportunities across projects.
- March – April 2026: Research teams will have shared sample datasets to initiate collaborative data harmonization efforts. During this phase, the ClinEpiDB team will review submitted datasets, map variables, identify shared concepts, and assess gaps across studies.
- May 2026: ClinEpiDB will develop and document harmonization guidelines, common data dictionaries, and variable mapping approaches based on the datasets submitted by the research teams.
- June 2026: Data harmonization working session (led by ClinEpiDB) during the in-person network workshop in Brazil (tentatively scheduled for the afternoon of Saturday, 13 June 2026). This session will focus on hands-on harmonization activities and collaborative problem solving.
