Overview / Symptoms

  • Diarrhea is the most common symptom in humans and animals
  • Usually affects young animals, especially calves and lambs, sometimes birds, fish, and rabbits. Horses, cats, and dogs are rarely affected
  • Transmitted to humans through swallowing contaminated water, eating uncooked foods contaminated with the parasite, or swallowing the parasite picked up from surfaces contaminated with the stool of an infected person
